It’s been six whole years since we last visited the amazing Cheshire parkland circuit, and it’s brilliant that we are going back after such a long time away. It’s one of the longer circuits in the UK and provides a proper high speed challenge for all those that venture out on track. When I was racing it was never in the calendar of the clubs that I raced with, but I have done a handful of laps around the 2.7 miles and that was enough for me to realise that there is an awful lot to learn so that a decent lap could be achieved.

CRMC Oulton Park - 24th & 26th August 2024

We can certainly look forward to plenty more exciting racing across all the classes that the club has available to everyone. Looking at the entry lists, the newer ‘Post Classic’ classes are certainly proving increasingly popular, but there is still plenty of ‘Classic’ racing to enjoy. Of particular note in this category is the Lansdowne series, which faithfully re-creates the big single four racing of the 50’s and 60’s. I am certainly looking forward to watching Graham Higlett doing battle with Dan Jackson yet again. But they certainly aren’t the only players in the race, plenty of others want, and are more than capable of taking the honours.

Oulton Park is big, green - and exciting!
Some of the clubs championships are already sorted, but in most, everything is still to play for, and some only a handful of points separate the top placings, so as usual we can expect some terrific battles. One rider who has particularly impressed me this year is Mike Bevan. Last weekend at the Anglesey BHR meeting, he had two spectacular wins on his fast Commando. Talking to him he said that he had found that racing with the CRMC has really improved his speed, and believe me there was plenty of that, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can bring the same speed to Oulton.
Come and race Oulton Park - it doesn't happen often!!
Cresting a rise at Oulton Park
Of course there are many riders who consistently impress me, so let’s mention some who don’t so often get a mention. Dan Jarman is currently leading the 250cc Euro class and has only had one non finish all year. Excellent, consistent riding Daniel. Another rider with an excellent finishing record is Adrian Hunter – he’s finished every race in the points this year and is a very strong 3rd in the over 55’s 500 Classic championship, just a single point behind Chris Hawkes.

Mike Burke (86) heads Chris Saltinstall (55)
Another two riders who have scored points in every single race are Mike Burke and Chris Saltinstall. This is proper Italian action here to watch and enjoy. Mike’s Ducati has the agility and corner speed, but not the sheer outright grunt of Chris’s big Guzzi. Thanks guys we all enjoy very much indeed!

Because at Oulton you are not allowed to race on two consecutive days, Sunday is a rest chill out day. But we still have things to get involved with. Mike ‘Spike’ Edwards is running a session on how to get the most out of Oulton Park, followed by a track walk. This will start at 11am. Then at 2pm there is wine tasting with some of the best wines in world for you to savour and enjoy. Finally at 4pm there is a cycling competition with three elements;- Speed, Obstacle and slow riding. It’s planned on being just good fun. It’s only £5 to enter with all profits going to the Benevolent fund and should be a good laugh. A bike is provided if needed.
Anyway lets make it a great event. Entries are still open, so please get them in – we want to see you all out there.

What's On at CRMC Oulton Park

Because at Oulton you are not allowed to race on two consecutive days, Sunday is a rest chill out day (or perhaps a repair and tweaking day, depending on how your Saturday races went!)

But we still have some great events planned for you to get involved!

At 11:00 am, Mike ‘Spike’ Edwards is running a session on how to get the most out of Oulton Park, followed by a track walk.
At 2:00 pm, there is wine tasting with some of the best wines in world for you to savour and enjoy, organised by long-time CRMC member Martin Hudson, a member of The Institute of Masters of Wine - not to be missed, he shares his knowledge of the best way to appreciate fine wines and has several for you to taste
At 4:00pm, there is a cycling competition with three elements: Speed, Obstacles and Slow Riding. It’s all about being just good fun. It will cost just £5 to enter and all profits are going to the CRMC Benevolent fund and should be a good laugh. A bike is provided if needed.

So let's make CRMC Oulton Park a great event. Entries are still open and we still have places in all races, so please get them in – it is always difficult to arrange racing at Oulton Park and we want to see as many of you there as possible.
